The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg, is launching a targeted safety strategy aimed at addressing violent and disruptive behaviour on Winnipeg Transit.
In 2024, 325 violent crimes were reported at Winnipeg Transit locations – including on buses and areas around bus shelters – a historic high and nearly triple 2019 levels. This upward trend in transit violence has continued into 2025.
Beginning this week, WPS will deploy an increased police presence across Winnipeg Transit routes and facilities. You can expect to see officers riding on buses and patrolling near transit stops, including bus shelters and stations. This operation will include both uniform and plainclothes officers and aims to prevent, detect and suppress violent crime and disorder that impacts the safety and wellbeing of our community.
Working with City partners, such as Winnipeg Transit and the Community Safety Team, the WPS brings a unique set of skills, tactics, and operational experience to this initiative. Officers will focus on high-risk areas and behaviours, complementing the efforts of our partners.
Everyone – riders, operators, and transit staff – deserves to feel safe. Violent and disruptive conduct will not be tolerated. This initiative is rooted in prevention and protection, aiming to foster a transit system that is welcoming, reliable, and secure for all Winnipeggers.
