Prolific shoplifter in custody following string of thefts, robbery, and garage break-in: C25-163103

A 31-year-old man, known to the Property Crime Unit as a prolific shoplifter, is in custody after being identified as the suspect in multiple thefts, a robbery, and a garage break-in since May 2025. The total value of stolen property is estimated at over $27,000.

The following incidents occurred in Winnipeg between May 9 and July 31, 2025. 

  • May 9, 2025: A retail store in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway reported the theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • May 10, 2025: Merchandise was reported stolen from a retail store in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • May 26, 2025: A retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue reported a theft of items (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 3, 2025: A hardware store in the 800 block of Leila Avenue reported a theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 6, 2025: A retail store in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway reported the theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 6, 2025: A theft was reported at a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 10, 2025: A theft occurred at a retail store in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 11, 2025: Merchandise was reported stolen from a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 14, 2025: Items were reported stolen from a retail store in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 15, 2025: A hardware store in the 700 block of Empress Street reported a theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 16, 2025: A hardware store in the 700 block of Empress Street reported a theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 16, 2025: A theft was reported at a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • June 19, 2025: A theft occurred at a drug store in the 1100 block of Concordia Avenue (Theft Under $5000).

  • June 21, 2025: A convenience store in the 100 block of Keewatin Street reported a theft of product (Theft Under $5000).

  • June 25, 2025: a retail store in the 1200 block of St. Mary’s Road reported a theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 3, 2025: A hardware store in the 700 block of Empress Street reported a theft of merchandise (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 3, 2025: A convenience store in the 100 block of Keewatin Street reported a theft of product (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 3, 2025: A theft was reported at a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 4, 2025: A gas station in the 1800 block of King Edward Street reported a theft of store merchandise. The suspect told an employee he was armed with a knife (Commercial Robbery). 
     
  • July 4, 2025: A theft occurred at a grocery store in the 1100 block of Grant Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 6, 2025: A theft was reported at a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue (Theft Under $5000).
     
  • July 10, 2025: A convenience store in the 100 block of Keewatin Street reported a theft of store product. The suspect pulled out a knife and threatened to stab employees of the store (Commercial Robbery). 
     
  • July 17, 2025: A break-in to a detached garage occurred at a residence in the 1400 block of Roy Avenue, and two bicycles were stolen from within (Break and Enter).

No victims were injured during the incidents.

The Property Crime Unit investigated the incidents and identified a 31-year-old suspect.  

On July 31, shortly after 7:00 p.m., investigators with the Property Crime Unit located the suspect near Keewatin Street and Logan Avenue where he was taken into custody.

Ryan Alexander MCDONALD (31) has been charged with:

  • Robbery X 2
  • Break Enter & Theft - Dwelling House
  • Theft Under $5000 X 20
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order X 4

He was detained in custody.
