On August 9, 2025, just after 2:13 a.m. Central District General Patrol officers were performing pro-active policing in the West End neighbourhood when they noticed a 2011 Nissan Rogue idling at a stop sign at the corner of Agnes Street and St. Matthews Avenue.

Officers observed the Nissan Rogue leave the area which later failed to stop at a red light at Maryland Street and Portage Avenue. As officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the Rogue fled at a high rate of speed.

The Rogue was safely followed with the assistance of Air1 and observed stopping in front of a residence in the 1300 block of Alexander Avenue. A 20-year-old man and and 21-year-old man fled the vehicle and were arrested by officers in the near vicinity a short time later.

A search of the 20-year-old man driver revealed $895 in Canadian currency on his person, which was subsequently seized.

Officers located and seized 2.9 grams of cocaine, 1.9 grams of crack cocaine, and a loaded .45 calibre handgun (with obliterated serial number) within the vehicle. An additional 0.3 grams of cocaine, 0.6 grams of crack cocaine and three cellular phones which had been discarded nearby, were also seized. The total street value of the illicit drugs is estimated at $320.

Awate Misgina YOSIEF (20), has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer

Eyasu ABRAHAM (21), has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With

Both men were detained in custody.
