Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, we all have a role to play in keeping each other safe.
Tips for Drivers
Turning right?
- Signal early
- Check your blind spots
- Merge behind, not ahead of, cyclists
- Enter the bike lane before turning. Never cut across it
Passing a cyclist?
- Leave at least 1 metre of space.
- Cross into the oncoming lane if it’s safe. Crowding is dangerous.
Parked? Check before you open.
- Use the “Dutch Reach” — open your door with your opposite hand to naturally check for cyclists.
Tips for Cyclists
Gear up for safety
- Wear a certified helmet
- Bright, reflective clothing
- Front white light + rear red light/reflector
Use hand signals. Make eye contact.
- Left turn: arm straight out
- Right turn: arm out, hand up
- Stop: arm out, hand down
Ride like a vehicle.
- Keep right — but stay safe
- Obey lights & signs
- Don’t weave or ride unpredictably
Ditch distractions.
- No headphones
- No phones
- Pull over if you need to check your device.
Bike Week is a celebration and a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility. Let’s look out for each other.
