On May 20, 2025, at approximately 3:15 p.m., an off-duty police officer observed an adult male abusing a large-breed dog on Assiniboine Avenue near the Midtown Bridge. Several bystanders had gathered and were attempting to intervene to stop the assault.
The officer identified himself as a Winnipeg Police Officer and, with the help of a witness, attempted to take the suspect into custody. The suspect refused to comply, attempted to kick the officer, made threats of bodily harm, and bit him in the upper body.
Central District General Patrol Officers attended to assist and arrested the suspect, who continued to resist.
A 46-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges for:
- Assault a Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Officer
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal.
He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
