On Friday, April 11 at approximately 5:59 p.m., patrolling Central District General Patrol officers observed a Ford F250, earlier reported stolen, being driven northbound in the 300 block of Home Street, between Portage Avenue and St. Matthews Street. In an attempt to stop the stolen vehicle from fleeing, officers positioned their cruiser vehicle across the single lane of traffic.

As the stolen vehicle approached the officers, the driver stopped and reversed into a civilian passenger vehicle positioned directly behind them. The driver drove towards the police vehicle and the officers who were now standing outside of their cruiser car. This resulted in the officers discharging their firearms at the stolen vehicle.

The stolen vehicle mounted the east boulevard and fled northbound towards St. Matthews Avenue, where it struck the cruiser vehicle of a second responding unit, losing control and colliding with a residence in the 500 block of Home Street.  The collision resulted in a fire which spread to a large fuel tank located in the bed of the pick-up truck, which subsequently exploded igniting the house and the truck on fire.

The 48-year-old male driver of the stolen vehicle and a 29-year-old female passenger fled on foot, however, were arrested nearby by attending officers and were detained in custody.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
