On February 2, 2025, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers were attending to a motor vehicle collision as part of their duties in the area of Ellice Avenue and Colony Street.
A 21-year-old male suspect stopped his vehicle behind the officers' marked cruiser car and exited with what appeared to be an open alcoholic beverage in hand. He engaged the officers in conversation while displaying signs of impairment.
The suspect returned to his vehicle, where officers directed him to remain stopped. Instead, he attempted to flee, reversing into an officer, driving over his foot, and fleeing the scene.
At approximately 8:26 p.m., a passer-by observed the suspect outside his vehicle near Pembina Highway and Bairdmore Boulevard, believed he was intoxicated, and contacted police. Officers located the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
Nicholas SAWCHUK, 21 yrs of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
- Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both
- Within 2 hrs of Ceasing to Operate a Conveyance is Impaired with BAC Equal or Over 80mgs
- Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon
He was detained in custody.
