On March 3, 2024, at approximately 2:45 p.m., patrolling members of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Foot Patrol Unit were alerted by a passerby to an adult male who had been stabbed in the downtown skywalks.

Foot Patrol officers quickly located a 44-year-old male victim suffering from an upper-body stabbing injury. Officers provided the male with emergency medical care until ambulance arrived. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

Officers quickly identified the passerby, (who had approached and alerted them to the victim),  as the suspect. Officers approached the suspect, who was still in the vicinity; however, he fled from officers. After a short foot pursuit, officers arrested the suspect in the skywalk near Graham Avenue and Hargrave Street. The suspect dropped a sharp-edged weapon to the ground before being handcuffed, and a second sharp-edged weapon, believed to have been discarded by the suspect during the foot pursuit, was recovered in a nearby stairwell. Both weapons were seized as evidence by officers.

Through their investigation, officers learned that the suspect and the victim, who were previously known to one another, were together when the suspect produced a weapon and proceeded to stab the victim in the upper body unprovoked. The suspect stole $20 from the suspect and fled on foot before alerting patrolling Foot Patrol officers of the injured victim.

Christopher Lee CHARTRAND, 37, of Winnipeg, is charged with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon x 2, and Failure to Comply with Probation Order x 2.

He was detained in custody.
