On February 26, 2024, at approximately 12:25 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) East District Community Support Unit members attended a residence in 0 to 100 block of Worthington Avenue regarding a male wanted on multiple warrants.

Initial contact with the male resulted in his refusal to attend to the door and speak with officers. Further, the male was in possession of a gun, which was discharged at officers from the residence. No one was injured.

As a result, members of the Tactical Support Team (TST) and Drone Unit were deployed. A nearby school was placed in a hold and secure as a safety precaution.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., smoke was observed coming from the residence, and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) was notified. Officers continued communication attempts to have the male leave the residence.

A short time later, the male exited the home while disregarding police commands. TST members attempted to de-escalate the situation to no avail, then fired a less-lethal munition (bean bag) rounds in an effort to temporarily incapacitate the male. As a result,  he was taken into custody without further incident. The male was transported to hospital for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

A 44-year-old male is facing charges, including five outstanding warrants.

Due to the deployment of a less-lethal munition round that resulted in an injury, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
