On February 12, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1100 block of Main Street for the report of a commercial robbery involving a male suspect armed with a firearm.

North District General Patrol officers attended and learned the male suspect had stolen property from a retail store while in the company of a child in his care at the time. The suspect also threatened a security officer who attempted to intervene and advised he was in possession of a firearm. The suspect fled on foot in the company of the child after placing the stolen property in the child’s backpack.

At approximately 9:35 p.m., officers located the suspect and child in a back lane in the 300 block of Boyd Avenue. The suspect was immediately uncooperative, and officers deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) to bring him under control after a short foot pursuit. Officers seized a machete and a CO² - powered handgun from his person. Officers confirmed the child, determined to be a male under 12 years old, was uninjured during the incident.

A 31-year-old male from Winnipeg is charged with the following offences:

- Robbery
- Fail to Provide Necessities of Life (Child)

- Possession of a Weapon x 2

- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition x 2

- Resist Peace Officer

- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 7

The arrested male was detained in custody.

The name of the suspect will not be released to protect the identity of the child involved in this matter. Officers turned over the child to the care of his mother.
