Beginning in November 2023 and during the holiday season, the Winnipeg Police Service conducted a Retail Theft Initiative in partnership with the Retail Council of Canada and Winnipeg's business community. This proactive effort addressed the serious issue of shoplifting, including the threat of injury to staff and the general public and financial loss incurred by retail outlets within the city.
The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes the issues surrounding retail theft are complex. We remain committed to working with our community partners and social service providers to ensure support is available to individuals facing various challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, or addiction.
Although the holidays have ended, this collaborative initiative continues.
On February 8, 2024, the Property Crime Unit, with the assistance of General Patrol and Community Support officers, provided theft deterrence at an outlet shopping centre on Sterling Lyon Parkway. Eight adults were arrested and charged for stealing approximately $3,000 worth of merchandise.
The Property Crime Unit and Divisional Community Support Units will continue to target areas of concern. Data collected through our crime analysis units helps determine where to focus theft-deterrence efforts.
