On February 6, 2024, at approximately 3:10 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 800 block of Buchanan Boulevard for the report of an off-duty RCMP officer being assaulted by two males.

General Patrol officers from the West District, assisted by North District General Patrol, School Resource officers, and Traffic Unit officers, attended and located an adult male victim suffering from upper-body injuries sustained during an assault. Officers arrested two adult male suspects without incident. The victim later attended hospital and received treatment for his injuries.

During the incident, school administration initiated hold and secure protocols, and attending officers subsequently assisted with traffic control to ensure the safe dismissal of students.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that both suspects had been in a vehicle during school dismissal and had begun to create a disturbance off-property in front of an elementary school. The off-duty officer approached the suspect’s vehicle, identified himself, and requested they vacate the area due to their unruly behaviour in close proximity to the school. The suspects became irate, exited their vehicle, and threatened the officer while physically assaulting him. Several bystanders witnessed the assault and intervened in an attempt to stop the ongoing assault.
