On January 29, 2023, at approximately 6:35 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in Transcona for a report of an armed male in distress. Soon after, East District General Patrol officers, accompanied by members of the Tactical Support Team, attended the residence occupied by the male and an adult female. The officers learned the male was armed with a rifle and prioritized bringing the female safely out of the residence.

An armed and barricaded situation ensued, and the Crisis Negotiation Unit was advised.

At approximately 7:11 p.m., TST members safely extracted the female. Officers spoke with her and verified her well-being; she reported no physical injuries due to the incident.

With a coordinated response by East District General Patrol Units, the Tactical Support Team, the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Unit (Drone Unit), and Crisis Negotiators, the male was taken into custody, and the incident was safely resolved after approximately three hours. The male was transported to hospital in stable condition.

No charges have been brought against the adult male involved, and he is not being named to protect the family's identity. The Winnipeg Police Service's Victim & Volunteer Services and the Manitoba Justice's Victim Services Unit will continue to provide support for the family.
