On December 17, 2023, at approximately 12:40 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service's Central District officers and AIR1 initiated a strategic follow of a stolen vehicle in the Spence neighbourhood.
While AIR1 guided ground units, the vehicle drove in a dangerous manner, disobeying traffic signals, driving at high rates of speed, and entering oncoming traffic.
The vehicle subsequently drove over a deployed stop stick and collided with a police cruiser car, then continued to drive on damaged wheels.
The vehicle stopped in the first 100 block of Herman Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle, and entered another stolen vehicle. The vehicle struck three officers who were on foot and attempting to arrest the suspect. At this time, an officer's firearm was discharged at the moving vehicle. Nobody was struck or injured from the discharge.
The vehicle continued to drive off and was subsequently contained at McAdam Avenue and Aikins Street. The lone occupant was taken into custody.
The accused was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. Two officers were also treated at hospital for injuries sustained and released. One additional officer received injuries but was not treated at hospital.
