On June 29, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the public river dock located in the 400 block of Tache Avenue for the report of a male who had been assaulted.
General Patrol officers from the East District attended a nearby hospital and located an adult male victim suffering from an upper-body injury sustained from an assault. The suspects fled before the police arrived. The victim's family contacted the police, and the victim conveyed himself to hospital, where he was treated for his injury.
On June 30, officers from the Downtown Foot Patrol located the suspect in the rear lane of the 200 block of Garry Street and placed him under arrest without incident.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the victim had attended the dock with family members when a group, including the suspect, approached them. The suspect group began berating the victim and his family and escalated when the suspect assaulted the victim in the upper body using a skateboard. Investigators believe the assault to be unprovoked and random.
The suspect and victim are not previously known to one another.
A 27-year-old male from Winnipeg was charged with Assault with a Weapon and released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
