Between March 5, and April 27, 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service received numerous reports involving residential break-ins throughout the city. As a result, the Property Crime Unit entered into an investigation linking a suspect to these offences.
The investigation has determined that the suspect would typically seek out properties where doors/windows were left insecure, day or night. Once inside, purses containing bank cards and credit cards were taken. The stolen cards were used for numerous fraudulent transactions totalling over $5,000.
The incidents occurred at the following locations:
- First 100 block of Saphire Place
- 1500 block of Pacific Avenue West
- First 100 block of Pegasus Street
- 600 block of Spruce Street x 2
- 700 block of Valour Road x 2
- 200 block of Victor Street
- 100 block of Sovereign Cove x 2
On May 1, 2023, investigators executed an entry warrant at a residence in the 600 block of Home Street, taking a male into custody.
Nelson Amiral FERREIRA, 36, of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following:
- Break & Enter Commit Theft x 6
- Break & Enter with Intent x 4
- Fraud Use of Credit Card x 5
- Theft Under $5,000
- Fail to Comply with Curfew
- Fail to Comply with Probation x 2
He was detained in custody.
The Property Crime Unit reminds the public of the following:
- Keep doors and windows secure at all times
- Keep sightlines clear, trim trees and shrubs to prevent a place for a potential burglar to hide
- Deter criminals with light. Use motion detectors outside and timers inside to give the appearance someone is home – even when you can’t be
- Change the locks upon moving into a new residence
- Keep your doors locked even when you are home or in your yard
- Get to know your neighbours
