On May 17, 2022, Winnipeg Police Major Crimes detectives made an arrest in the murder of Richard Contois. Contois was fatally assaulted on May 6, 2022, near the Slaw Rebchuk Bridge.

A 17-year-old male has been charged with:
- Second Degree Murder
- Fail to Comply with Sentence x 2
- Possess Weapon

The accused was also charged in relation to an aggravated assault that had occurred on February 2, 2022, in the 300 block of Charles Street. Two adults were seriously assaulted and taken to the hospital in critical condition. In this incident, he has been charged with:
- Aggravated Assault x 2
- Break & Enter – Commit Assault
- Possess Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking x 2

He has been detained in custody.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

As previously released:

On May 6, 2022, at 10:29 p.m., a General Patrol unit was travelling on the Slaw Rebchuk Bridge when they located an injured adult male near a sidewalk.

Officers provided emergency medical care, and the male was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit.

Investigators ask anyone travelling on the bridge before the incident who feels they may have information that can help or dash-cam footage to contact detectives at 204-986-6219.

Update:

Soon after arriving at the hospital, the male was pronounced deceased. His death is being investigated as a homicide, and he has been identified as Richard Dominic Anthony Contois, a 31-year-old male of Winnipeg.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
