Since the beginning of the 2023 holiday season, the Winnipeg Police Service launched a Retail Theft Initiative in partnership with the Retail Council of Canada and Winnipeg's business community. This proactive effort addressed the serious issue of shoplifting, including the threat of injury to staff and the general public and financial loss incurred by retail outlets within the city.

This week marks the beginning of Spring Break for Winnipeg schools. Although many families may take holidays, many will stay local and enjoy Winnipeg's attractions and venues.

Retail stores throughout the city will particularly experience an increased volume of citizens. As activity increases in the retail sector, the Property Crimes Unit, with the assistance of Community Support officers, will be ever-present and committed to providing crime deterrence at many retailers across the city.

The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes the issues surrounding retail theft are complex. We remain committed to working with our community partners and social service providers to ensure support is available to individuals facing various challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, or addiction.

Thank you to the public and the business community for supporting the Retail Theft Initiative.

If retailers require safety and crime prevention information, contact the Community Relations Division.
