On January 11, 2024, at approximately 5:56 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service attended to a residence in the 500 block of William Newton Avenue regarding a male wanted on the strength of a Canada-Wide Immigration Warrant.

Officers were granted permission into the residence and discovered the subject male hiding in a bedroom, using his body to barricade the door shut. In an attempt to gain entry into the room, Oleoresin Capsicum (O.C. spray) was deployed. Once inside the room, officers observed the male dive out of a second-story window to facilitate his escape.

Once on the ground, officers in the area observed him hiding in deep snow, and he fled on foot as the police approached. During a foot pursuit, the subject appeared to reach into his waistband, and police deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW); however, its connection was ineffective.

He was located in the 500 block of Riverton Avenue, where he resisted arrest, and force was used to take him into custody.

He was transported to hospital by ambulance in stable condition and admitted for medical treatment.

The Canada Border Services Agency took over custody on the strength of his warrant.

The nature of the male’s injuries resulted in the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) being notified and they have now assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.
