On October 17, 2023, at approximately 10:45 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a retail coffee shop in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue for the report of an adult female suspect armed with a knife.
Members of the Tactical Support Team (TST) attended and located a 58-year-old male victim suffering from an upper-body injury sustained from a sharp-edged weapon. TST members located the adult female suspect, who had fled to the intersection of Salter Street and Dufferin Avenue. She was safely placed under arrest and turned over to North District General Patrol officers.
Through their investigation, officers determined the suspect attended the coffee shop in an intoxicated state and approached a 40-year-old female patron requesting to use her cellular phone. Shortly after being denied the request, the suspect proceeded to reach over the counter and arm herself with a large knife before waving it around threateningly. The suspect grabbed the female victim and held the knife to her upper body in a life-threatening manner.
The 58-year-old male patron, witnessing the incident, intervened in an attempt to disarm the suspect, successfully providing the female victim the opportunity to retreat. The male sustained an upper-body laceration for which he did not seek medical attention. The female suspect fled on foot, leaving the knife behind, and was apprehended by attending TST members shortly after. The female victim was not injured as a result of the incident.
When asked to identify herself to officers, the suspect provided a false name; however, she was positively identified through their investigation.
A 20-year-old female from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:
- Assault with a Weapon x 2
- Possession of a Weapon
- Attempt Obstruct Justice
She was detained in custody.
