A new Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) is being tested by the Winnipeg Police Service at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Mount Royal Road, one of the existing 49 ISC locations, to review the advancements in technology in speed and red light enforcement.
The camera will be operational for approximately 30 days, and no violations will be issued or processed during this testing period. In addition, no personal information will be retained.
The DriveSafe Enforcement System being tested was installed Thursday, October 5, at no cost to the police service or city. The system uses video tracking and radar compared to the current cameras that use photographs and loops embedded in the road. It’s also capable of license plate recognition.
The current cameras used for photo enforcement are obsolete; new camera systems must be approved in the Image Capturing Enforcement Regulation under The Highway Traffic Act.
The Winnipeg Police Service aims to reduce traffic collisions, road fatalities, and traffic violations through improved education, enforcement, and evaluation. Photo enforcement is one part of the Service’s strategy to make the city streets safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
