On April 17, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1500 block of Regent Avenue for the report of a male who had been shot.
Multiple units, including members of the Tactical Support Team, attended the area and located a 17-year-old male who had been apprehended by Kildonan Place Security personnel and an off-duty WPS officer. An imitation firearm loaded with what was determined to be blank cartridges was recovered on his person. It was also noted that the male suffered from being bear sprayed. He was medically assessed and treated at the scene. Officers also located a 16-year-old male youth suffering from minor upper-body injuries sustained from a firearm discharge. The 16-year-old male was transported to hospital in stable condition and treated for minor injuries.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned both males were involved in a verbal argument escalating with the 16-year-old discharging a canister of bear spray toward the 17-year-old victim. The 17-year-old then proceeded to discharge an imitation firearm toward the 16-year-old.
Both suspects were not previously known to one another.
A 16-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Possession of a Weapon
A 17-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Use of Imitation Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence
Both were released on Undertakings as mandated by the Criminal Code.
