On January 12, 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service responded after receiving a report of an attempted robbery when two suspects tried to steal a man’s dog as he walked it in the Spence neighbourhood.
General Patrol officers from the Central District met with the victim, a male in his 50s. He was walking his dog at approximately 6:00 a.m., near McMicken Street and Sargent Avenue, when he was approached by two unknown females who asked for the time and then asked to pet his dog.
When the victim denied the request, one of the suspects grabbed the leash out of his hand and threatened him with bear spray.
The victim punched the suspect and grabbed his dog. He ran to safety and was not injured. The suspects subsequently fled the area.
Suspect #1 was described as a female in her 30s, Indigenous in appearance, with a medium to large build, wearing a ¾ length jacket, with dark hair tied back.
Suspect #2 was described as a female in her 30s with a medium build and was smoking a cigarette.
The Winnipeg Police Service encourages citizens to familiarize themselves with personal crime prevention strategies, including walking with another person in well-lit, populated areas and carrying a personal alarm device.
