On September 14, 2022, the North District Community Support Unit conducted a “bait bike” project in response to an influx of bike thefts reported since June in the Garden City/West Kildonan shopping areas.

Officers engaged with businesses in the vicinity who submitted reports and had video surveillance of bicycles being stolen from the immediate area.

One neighbourhood gym indicated approximately a hundred bikes had been stolen in plain view since June 2022. Dozens of reports were submitted and investigated, while dozens were not reported but had been captured on surveillance.

The operation strategically placed a decoy bike in various locations near businesses that reported multiple bike thefts recently.

Two adult males were arrested for attempting to steal the bike, while another two males were arrested for casing bikes nearby with bolt cutters. One of these males was a suspect in the gym location thefts.

Making a police report enables police to pinpoint high crime areas, develop smart policing initiatives and focus resources.

The Winnipeg Police Service encourages all victims of property thefts to submit their reports for follow-up online (when applicable).

Bicycle registration is encouraged. If your stolen bicycle is located, you will be notified immediately, and arrangements can be made for you to get your bicycle back.
