Update:
As previously released on June 2, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service commenced a search at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility looking for additional human remains of the deceased, 24-year-old Rebecca Contois of Winnipeg.
Yesterday, June 14, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Ground Search and Rescue Team (GSAR) recovered human remains.
Rebecca was deemed the victim of homicide when her partial remains were discovered in a collection receptacle in the 200 block of Edison Avenue on May 16, 2022.
As the investigation progressed, a suspect was identified. On May 18, the Homicide Unit charged 35-year-old Jeremy Skibicki of Winnipeg with First Degree Murder.
In a short time frame, investigators learned that additional human remains of Rebecca Contois may have been taken to the Brady Facility during a residential pickup. Police communicated with Brady and halted the additional dumping of materials. An extensive area of the landfill was sectioned off to organize a search.
Throughout this search, with the assistance of the Brady landfill staff, GSAR members have combed through a vast amount of debris, challenged by both safety concerns and difficulties from recent inclement weather.
In collaboration with community organizations supporting families of MMIWG2S+ People, we have sought to provide trauma-informed and culturally safe supports to Rebecca’s family during their agonizing time of grief and mourning.
These groups include the WPS Family Support and Resource Advocate, MKO’s (MMIWG Liaison Unit), Ka Ni Kanichihk (Medicine Bear Counselling), and the community’s respected Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
The scene at Brady is currently being held, pending an autopsy of the discovered remains.
The Homicide Unit will continue to update the family through a trauma-informed approach as more information becomes available.
No new charges have been laid as a result of this discovery.
