Bear Spray Assault – Arrest: C24-144322

On June 24, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers from the Central District responded to the report of a bear spray assault in the area of Young/Ellice.

Upon arrival, officers identified eight victims (6 adults) and, a toddler and a baby who were with their mother.

The victims indicated that while walking in the area, a random male discharged bear spray at them and ran off. Officers on scene requested medical assistance and obtained statements from those who wished to do so.

Police searched the area and spotted a male matching the suspect description near Sherbrook and Ellice. As they approached, he motioned to his waistband and took off running. After a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street. During the apprehension of this male, police deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser), and a canister of discarded bear spray was recovered.

A 25-year-old male, Tiren DETTANIKKEAZE, of Winnipeg, was charged with the following offences and detained in custody:

  • Assault with a Weapon x 6
  • Possession of a Weapon
