Child Death Investigation – Arrests: C22-23479

On February 2, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service, along with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, attended a residence on Westgrove Way regarding an unresponsive infant. The three-month-old female was transported to hospital and was pronounced deceased days later.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit entered into an investigation regarding the sudden death of Layla MATTERN MUISE, three months old.

Autopsy and toxicology reports determined that Layla’s death resulted from exposure to fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The Child Abuse Unit continued the lengthy investigation and consulted with the Manitoba Prosecution Service, at which time charges were authorized against both parents.

On March 19, 2024, Christopher Joseph MATTERN, 39 and Alison Kimberly MUISE, 40, were arrested and charged with Fail to Provide the Necessaries of Life.

They were detained in custody.
