On March 2, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a multi-dwelling apartment building in the 300 block of Kennedy Street to check the well-being of an adult male acting erratically, causing a disturbance and being aggressive toward members of the public.
Central General Patrol officers attended and located the male outside the building exhibiting signs of experiencing an agitated chaotic event due to apparent drug use. Due to his erratic, unpredictable behaviour, officers attempted to place him in handcuffs for their safety, the safety of the general public, and his safety.
During the process of being handcuffed, the male proceeded to bite one officer, resulting in a minor lower-body injury, and attempted to bite a second. The male was transported to the hospital in stable condition, where he received medical attention and was later released. The injured officer received medical attention at the hospital.
During the arrest, several tenants from the apartment building threw articles from balconies down to street level at attending officers, including a piece of carry-on luggage. Neither officers nor members of the public were struck or injured by the thrown articles.
A 42-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges of Assault Peace Officer x 2, Resist Peace Officer, and Fail to Comply with Conditions of Release Order x 2.
He was detained in custody.
