On February 3, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to Grassie Boulevard and Lagimodiere Boulevard for the report of an agitated male on a transit bus.

Within a few minutes, General Patrol members from the East District arrived and observed a male actively assaulting the operator of the bus. Officers stopped the assault and arrested the adult male suspect. The 39-year-old male victim sustained upper-body injuries and was assessed by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect had demanded the victim transport him to a street not provided by the designated route. The suspect became enraged and proceeded to assault the operator when the request could not be accommodated. The operator stopped the bus, activated his emergency equipment, and opened doors to allow other riders to disembark safely. Once stopped, the suspect threatened to stab the victim and continued to physically assault him until attending officers intervened, stopped the assault, and placed the suspect in custody.

Dakota James Ernest ASHAM, 29, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:

- Assault with a Weapon (grocery bag and contents)
- Assault

- Utter Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

He was detained in custody.
