On January 2, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a report about a stabbing involving a group of males at a shopping mall in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue.

Officers from the West District were proactively patrolling in the area as part of a retail theft and violent crime initiative and were quickly alerted to the incident and responded.

Upon arrival, police located an injured teen male, bleeding and receiving first aid from a security guard. The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

Additional officers in the surrounding area observed an individual believed to be a suspect running nearby. A foot chase ensued, and a male was taken into custody.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and an initial investigation determined the 15-year-old victim was confronted and robbed by a group of people. As he managed to escape, he was chased by the group and stabbed before he got to safety, and the suspects fled.

An 18-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with Robbery and detained in custody.
