Beginning in November 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service has been conducting a Retail Theft Initiative in partnership with the Retail Council of Canada and Winnipeg's business community. This proactive effort was initiated to address the serious issue of shoplifting, including the threat of injury to staff and the general public, including the financial loss incurred by various retail outlets within the City.
So far, during December, 132 theft-related arrests have been made due to the efforts of the Property Crime Unit and Community Support Units. These arrests have occurred within the retail businesses throughout the City.
The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes that the issues surrounding retail theft are complex. We remain committed to working with our community partners and social safety net providers to ensure support is provided to individuals facing food insecurity, poverty, or addiction challenges.
Through this initiative, data is collected through crime analysis to determine where to focus our deterrence efforts. Officers will target affected areas as this initiative will continue to be an ongoing focus of the Property Crime Unit and Divisional Community Support Units.
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the public and the business community for supporting the Retail Theft Initiative as we enter the festive season.
