Medical Assistance – C23-257426

Released: October 24, 2023 at 2:12 p.m.

On October 23, 2023, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) sent an emergency call to assist in the 500 block of Arlington Street. They were attempting to treat an adult female in medical distress exhibiting erratic and combative behaviour. An individual on scene was armed with broken glass, prompting WFPS to urgently request police assistance.

In an effort to assist WFPS in administering sedation, officers physically restrained the female, who continued to be combative and spit at emergency responders.

While still on scene, the female experienced a medical event and was transported to hospital in critical condition, where she remains in care.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and will take jurisdiction and investigate this incident.
