Assault Peace Officer – Arrests: C23-255749/R23-55608

Released: October 22, 2023 at 1:59 p.m.

On October 21, 2023, at approximately 7:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the intersection of St. Mary Avenue and Donald Street for an off-duty officer requesting assistance after being assaulted.

Foot Patrol and General Patrol officers attended and learned the officer was initially approached by two male suspects at the intersection mentioned above. One suspect attempted to assault the officer physically. The suspects fled on foot, and the officer contacted police dispatch for assistance.

While waiting for assistance with property left behind by the first suspects, a third suspect approached the officer, confronted him armed with a machete concealed on his person, and demanded the return of the first suspects’ property. This suspect fled on a bicycle after the officer denied his request.

General Patrol Unit officers located one of the initial suspects in the 300 block of St. Mary Avenue and the third suspect in the 300 block of Cumberland Avenue. The discarded machete was recovered nearby and seized as evidence. Officers arrested both suspects without incident.

The officer suffered no injuries as a result of the assaults.

A 33-year-old male and a 27-year-old male, both from Winnipeg,  are facing Assault Peace Officer charges. They were detained in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit has assumed the investigation.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477), or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
