On October 20, 2023, at 8:20 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the Valley Gardens area for a report of a domestic dispute. Soon after, attending officers encountered a male armed with a knife who retreated inside the residence and refused to exit. The officers also learned three residence occupants had self-evacuated before their arrival.

An armed and barricaded situation ensued, and the Crisis Negotiation Unit was advised.

With a coordinated response by East District General Patrol Units, Air1, and the Tactical Support Team, the male was taken into custody, and the incident was safely resolved after approximately three hours. The suspect was transported to hospital in stable condition, where he was assessed and medically cleared.

Officers spoke with and verified the well-being of the occupants, who reported no physical injuries due to the incident.

A 36-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged with:

- Assault
- Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Disobeying Order of the Court x 4

He was detained in custody and is not being named to protect the family's identity. The Winnipeg Police Service's Victim & Volunteer Services and the Manitoba Justice's Victim Services Unit will continue to provide access to support for the family.
