On July 12, 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service became aware of social media posts encouraging people to gather to attend to a private residence to confront an individual with respect to an earlier incident at Brady Road Resource Management Facility.
On July 12, 2023, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Winnipeg Police Services units observed a large crowd causing a disturbance outside a residence in the Cecil Street and Elgin Avenue area. The crowd grew in size to approximately 40-50 people and the crowd’s behaviour escalated to the degree of causing property damage.
A 19-year-old male threw a rock through a window of the residence. He was arrested on a charge of Mischief Under $5,000 and was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
Numerous police units were present to de-escalate the incident and maintain public safety. The crowd eventually disbursed, and the individual in the residence was not harmed.
The Winnipeg Police Service respects the right to freedom of expression and lawful assembly. The expectation for all citizens participating in such assembly is to behave in a peaceful, and respectful manner. Violence will not be tolerated. Police must balance the rights of individuals to gather with the need to ensure public safety and keep the peace.
