Historical Sexual Assault – Arrest: R20-32280

Released: July 11, 2023 at 1:15 p.m.

On June 18, 2020, members of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Sex Crimes Unit entered into an investigation regarding the sexual assault of a then 20-year-old survivor on or about November 18, 1993, at the Nygard Corporate headquarters located at 1340 Notre Dame Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.

In December 2022, the matter was forwarded to Saskatchewan Justice for an independent review at the direction of the Manitoba Justice Minister.

On July 10, 2023, after reviewing the opinion from Saskatchewan Justice, the Winnipeg Police Service obtained an arrest warrant for Sexual Assault and Unlawful Confinement for the accused, 81-year-old Peter John Nygard.

On July 11, 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Sex Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the Toronto Police Service Human Trafficking Enforcement Team, arrested Nygard on the strength of the warrant at the Toronto South Detention Centre, where he remains in custody.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank Manitoba Justice, the Government of Saskatchewan Public Prosecutions, and the Toronto Police Service for their assistance.

The Winnipeg Police Service will not provide additional information or comment as this matter is before the courts.
