On June 30, 2023, at approximately 10:55 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service were alerted to the 100 block of Dysart Road at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus for the report of a potentially Dangerous Situation.

The University of Manitoba had reported that an unstable chemical with a potential for explosion was stored in one of the buildings and notified the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS). The volatile material, learned to be a chemical commonly found in laboratories, was contained and deemed not to be a suspicious package.

WFPS members evacuated buildings in the area and attended the involved building. The WFPS requested assistance from the Winnipeg Police Service’s Bomb Unit, and a coordinated Emergency Action Plan was initiated.

West District General Patrol Units, assisted by Traffic and Auxiliary Cadet Units, secured the scene and established a safe perimeter before the arrival of the Bomb Unit.

Attending members of the Bomb Unit removed the volatile material from the building and moved it to an outdoor Contained Detonation Location. At 4:08 p.m., Bomb Unit members safely detonated the material.

No injuries were reported during this incident.
