Aggravated Assault – Arrest: C23-123308

Released: May 27, 2023 at 9:12 a.m.

On May 24, 2023, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue with multiple reports of an assaulted male.

General Patrol officers from the West District attended and located a seriously injured 19-year-old male receiving medical care from concerned citizens. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition officers arrested a suspect at the scene without incident.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the suspect and the victim were walking eastbound on Ellice Avenue from Ferry Road and became involved in a heated discussion. Unprovoked, the suspect began physically assaulting the victim as they continued to walk. During the assault, the victim was rendered unconscious and robbed of personal property. Investigators learned a concerned citizen intervened and interrupted the assault. Several Good Samaritans assisted the victim and prevented the suspect from escaping before the police arrived.

The suspect and victim were previously known to one another.

A 21-year-old male has been charged with the following offences:

- Aggravated Assault

- Robbery

He was detained in custody.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the Good Samaritans who selflessly assisted the victim. Their actions prevented a continued assault and assisted officers in safely arresting the suspect.
