On May 7, 2023, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a member from the Traffic Division was parked in the 300 block of Notre Dame Avenue and observed an individual screaming and the sound of something being smashed. An intoxicated female suspect was located damaging nearby vehicles.

While investigating the matter further, the suspect confronted the officer with a cleaver-style knife and refused to drop the weapon. As a result, a conducted-energy weapon (Taser) was deployed. The suspect eventually complied after throwing the knife onto the ground. However, while being taken into custody, she continued to be aggressive by kicking, punching and biting the officer. The officer sustained upper and lower-body injuries due to the attack.

The investigation also revealed that the suspect had been involved in another weapon-related incident in the downtown area earlier in the day.

Desiree Starr LOONFOOT, 26, of Winnipeg, has been charged with the following:

  • Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Disarming a Peace Officer
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Mischief Over $5000.00
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 3
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

She was detained in custody.
