On March 10, at approximately 8 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the intersection of Main Street and James Avenue for the report of an adult female who had been assaulted.

General Patrol officers from the West and North Districts, with assistance from the Flight Operations Unit (Air1), attended and located a 47-year-old female victim suffering from injuries sustained from a physical assault. The suspect was located nearby and placed under arrest without incident. The victim was assessed by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members and medically cleared.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect approached the victim and assaulted her in an unprovoked manner, causing her to fall to the ground hitting her head on the concrete. The suspect continued to assault the victim on the ground; however, a good Samaritan intervened, and the suspect fled on foot before the police arrived.

The suspect and the victim were not previously known to one another.

Ernest Anderson BALLANTYNE, 39, of Winnipeg, has been charged with Assault.

He was detained in custody.
