On March 4, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service issued a media release regarding an extensive fire at a two-story building with residential suites in the 800 block of Main Street.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service was on scene controlling traffic as both northbound and southbound Main Street was shut down while fire crews worked to put out the blaze. Officers located a male in his 30s in the area who had suffered smoke inhalation, and he was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and this male was subsequently arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Arson with Disregard for Human Life
- Arson Causing Damage to Property
He was detained in police custody.
