On February 23, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a male who had set a fire inside a two-story residential suite in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue. Tenants indicated the occupant was possibly armed with a weapon and had barricaded himself within the suite.
Upon arrival, police and WFPS (already onscene) entered the building. Police breached a barricaded basement suite where the fire was and located the male armed with a pipe. He complied with police directions to drop the pipe and was removed to safety and taken into custody.
Approximately a dozen occupants were evacuated and provided temporary shelter in a warm transit bus while WFPS battled the fire. Four police members were treated for smoke inhalation, and the accused was transported to hospital in stable condition for precautionary measures.
A male in his 60s is facing the charge of Arson with Disregard for Human Life. He remains in police custody.
