On December 19, 2022, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Central District General Patrol officers observed a fight at St. Matthews Avenue and Maryland Street involving an adult female suspect armed with a hammer.
Officers approached the suspect, directed her to drop the hammer, and immediately placed her under arrest without incident. Officers seized the hammer and a knife from the suspect.
Officers located a 43-year-old female victim and learned the suspect approached her, requested a cigarette, and assaulted her in the upper body before robbing her of her purse. A physical struggle ensued, and the suspect produced and brandished a hammer toward the victim. A 55-year-old male and a 34-year-old female intervened to assist the victim and were assaulted by the suspect. The suspect physically assaulted the female victim in the upper body and struck the male victim in the upper body with a hammer.
The victims did not sustain notable injuries and did not require medical assistance.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that shortly before this incident, the suspect attended a business in the 700 block of Portage Avenue and stole merchandise.
