Attempt Murder/Arson – Arrests: C22-292817

Released: December 19, 2022 at 1:07 p.m.

On December 18, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service arrested and charged an 18-year-old male and two teenage females for Attempt Murder and Arson-related offences after a  female victim was located inside a hotel fire.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a hotel fire in the 3700 block of Portage Avenue. An adult female was discovered unconscious inside a suite, transported to hospital in critical condition, and later upgraded to stable condition.

General Patrol officers determined three suspects linked to the fire who had fled the area. A 14-year-old female was located nearby and taken into custody.

Police located two other suspects ( a male and a female) near Livinia Avenue and Isbister Street. Upon taking them into custody, a sawed-off firearm was found in their possession.

The Major Crimes Unit continued investigating and determined the female victim was in the company of the three suspects before the fire.

Cassius Vaughn MALCOLM (18) of Winnipeg was charged with the following offences:

- Attempt to Commit Murder

- Arson with Disregard for Human Life

- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

He was detained in custody.

A 16-year-old female was charged with:

- Attempt to Commit Murder

- Arson with Disregard for Human Life

- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession was Unauthorized

- Identity Fraud

- Failing to Comply with Court Orders x 4

- Warrant for Failing to Attend Court

- Warrant for Failing to Appear in Ident
- Warrant for Failing to Comply Sentence Order

She was detained in custody.

A 14-year-old female was charged with:

- Attempt to Commit Murder

- Arson with Disregard for Human Life

She was detained in custody.
