On November 10, 2022, at approximately 8:15 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 500 block of Portage Avenue (U of W Campus) for the report of a male armed with a large machete threatening students and security personnel. After exiting the property, security personnel followed the male suspect to the Axworthy Health and RecPlex located in the 300 block of Spence Street.
General Patrol officers from the Central District attended and located the suspect inside RecPlex, still armed with a machete. The male dropped the machete at the officer’s direction before being safely placed under arrest after a brief struggle. Officers seized the machete as evidence, and no injuries were reported.
Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect threatened students and security personnel by swinging the machete aggressively and gesturing a physical attack.
Ashok Jeetawdra SALWAN, 45, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a Weapon
- Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Resist Peace Officer
He was detained in custody.
