On August 22, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of a robbery in progress at a residence in the first block of Woodcrest Drive.

Within minutes, officers from the North, West, and East Districts attended the residence, located a 70-year-old male victim suffering from serious upper-body injuries and provided emergency medical care until ambulance arrived. Officers placed an adult male suspect under arrest within the residence. The male victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition, where he remains. His injuries are being described as life-altering.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation. Investigators have determined the suspect attended the victims’ residence and forced his way in when the door was answered. Investigators also determined the suspect armed himself with a weapon with which he assaulted the male victim, causing severe injury. The 64-year-old female victim managed to flee to a neighbour’s residence, and police were contacted.

Through their investigation, investigators determined that on August 21, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the same suspect broke into a separate residence on the same block after scaring away the 64-year-old resident from her property. Investigators also determined the suspect subsequently broke into the residence and proceeded to steal personal property, including keys to the victim’s vehicle. The victim in this incident left her property and called police; however, the suspect fled in the victim’s vehicle before officers arrived.

Officers believe the incident was random and that the suspect and victims were not previously known to one another.
