On May 22, 2022, at approx. 12:23 a.m., a General Patrol unit was in the area of Sargent Avenue and Spence Street when they were flagged down by a citizen who reported that a male was being “jumped” in front of a nearby food establishment.

Officers attended the area and observed a male suspect assaulting a 39-year-old male victim. The suspect was also seen to be in possession of a partially-concealed knife and subsequently fled on foot.

During the ensuing foot pursuit, the suspect produced an 18-inch sai-style weapon. He later discarded it but was uncooperative, and a conducted energy weapon (“Taser”) was used to take him into custody safely. The suspect was later treated for minor injuries sustained during the confrontation, and the weapon was recovered.

A second male suspect fled on a bicycle that had been stolen from the victim and was apprehended near Balmoral Street and Cumberland Avenue with the assistance of AIR1. The bike was recovered.

It is believed that the suspects and victim were previously unknown to each other and had been involved in a verbal dispute which escalated to a robbery. As a result, the victim was knocked off his bike and assaulted while on the ground.

A 16-year-old male of Winnipeg is facing charges of:

- Robbery
- Possession of a Weapon
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition

He was released on an Appearance Notice (as mandated by the Criminal Code).

A second 16-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:

- Robbery
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
- Fail to Comply with Sentence (x2)

He was detained in custody.
