Emerald ash borer control program commences

Winnipeg, MB – On Monday, June 11, 2018 weather permitting, the City of Winnipeg's Insect Control Branch will commence its emerald ash borer control program in Insect Management Areas 5 (Chalmers, Glenelm), 6 (East Elmwood, Kildonan Crossing, Munroe East, Talbot Grey, Tyne Tees), 9 (Dugald, Melrose, Mission Gardens, Transcona South, Transcona Yards, St. Boniface Industrial Park), 10 (North St. Boniface, Tissot, Central St. Boniface, Dufresne, Mission Industrial, Holden), 11 (Glenwood, Norwood East, Norwood West), 12 (Archwood, Maginot, Niakwa Park, Stock Yards, Windsor Park), 13 (Alpine Place, Elm Park, Lavalee, St. George, Varennes, Worthington), 14 (Kingston Crescent, Minnetonka, Norberry, Pulberry, Victoria Crescent), 15 (Niakwa Place, Southdale, Southland Park, Symington Yards, The Mint), 25 (Beaumont, Crescent Park, Maybank, Parker, Point Road, Wildwood), 32 (Earl Grey, Ebby Wentworth, Grant Park, McMillan, Rockwood, Roslyn), 33 (Lord Roberts, River - Osborne, Riverview), 41 (Armstrong Point, Broadway - Assiniboine, Legislature, Portage & Main, South Portage, The Forks, West Broadway, Wolseley), 42 (Central Park, Colony, Daniel McIntyre, Portage - Ellice, Spence, West Alexander), and 46 (Centennial, China Town, Civic Centre, Dufferin, Dufferin Industrial, Exchange District, Logan C.P.R., Lord Selkirk Park, North Point Douglas, South Point Douglas).

Treatment will occur between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, weather permitting. Treatment will occur on an ongoing basis until July, utilizing the insecticides TreeAzin® (azadirachtin) or IMA-jet® (imidacloprid) which is injected directly into ash trees located on City property. Only ash trees selected for treatment by the Urban Forestry Branch based on predetermined criteria will be treated. These products have been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency, and will be used in accordance with federally approved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators.

Register for notification
Residents can register for email notification regarding the emerald ash borer control program by visiting City of Winnipeg – Insect Control Register for Notification. They can also register for telephone notification by contacting 311 and providing their name, address, and phone number. Once registered, residents will receive automated phone or email notification identifying the area(s) of the City in which the Insect Control crews are intending to work, weather permitting.
