Winnipeg, MB - City of Winnipeg elected officials and employees will join thousands of other Canadians in observing Canada’s National Day of Mourning which is held each year on April 28. The National Day of Mourning is held to commemorate workers who have been injured or killed in the workplace as well as workers who have become ill as a result of their work.
“Tomorrow, we join together to acknowledge and recognize all those around the world who have died or been injured while at work,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Education and awareness are key parts of the conversation that businesses and organizations need to have in order to prevent injuries and fatalities in the workplace, and we all need to remain committed to finding ways to prevent injuries and fatalities.”
To help mark the National Day of Mourning, the City will hold a ceremony on Friday, April 27. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Location: City Hall Court Yard, 510 Main St.
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 9:55 a.m.
In case of inclement weather, ceremony will be moved to the Council Building.
In addition to the ceremony at City Hall, three other National Day of Mourning ceremonies will take place on Friday, April 27, at various City worksites.
The City is committed to becoming SAFE Work Certified, and has developed a certification plan. SAFE Work Certified is a new voluntary standard for workplace safety and health launched by SAFE Work Manitoba in January 2017.
Certification will involve audits of City departments to the SAFE Work Certified Standard, which will take place over the next several years. Conformance to the standard will ensure consistent application of effective safety and health management practices, leading to fewer injuries and illnesses for workers.
