Winnipeg, MB – Today, Mayor Bowman announced the honourary renaming of Portage Avenue East from Main Street to Westbrook Street as "Winnipeg Goldeyes Way" in recognition of the Winnipeg Goldeyes' second consecutive American Association Championship win.

“Winning a single championship series like this is incredible,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Winning back-to-back championships, however, is certainly an achievement worthy of special recognition from our city.”

“Congratulations to all the players, management, and staff of the Winnipeg Goldeyes ball club on this extraordinary accomplishment,” said Mayor Bowman. “You have represented Winnipeg well, and made us all proud!”

Mayor Bowman noted the Winnipeg Goldeyes ball club is an exemplary community organization who adds to the vibrancy of the community in many ways outside of the ballpark through their programs such as the Community Zone, the Field of Dreams Foundation as well as mascot appearances at various events in the community throughout the season. This year’s championship marks back-to-back championship wins and the third championship in six years.

“The Winnipeg Goldeyes are thrilled to be honoured in such a manner by our great city,” said Mr. Sam Katz, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Goldeyes. “I cannot be more proud of our players, coaches, and staff on winning-back-to-back championships. It’s extremely difficult to simply make the playoffs in the American Association, let alone to win a championship. Winning two in a row and three in the last six years is a testament to hard work and commitment to excellence from everyone within the organization.”

Honourary “Winnipeg Goldeyes Way” signs will be installed today and will remain in place for the next five years after which they will be donated to the Goldeyes organization.
